The short answer
Why look beyond your own town?
Because the right car might not be near you. Smaller towns have fewer cars for sale, so you end up choosing from what's there rather than what suits you. Widening the search to the whole country means more choice on model, kilometres and price.
How to buy a car from a distance, step by step
- Check the history first. Run a full vehicle report on the plate or VIN. It's online, so distance doesn't matter. The history check guide covers what to look for.
- Get it inspected by someone independent. Book a pre-purchase inspection near the car, not one arranged by the seller. Ask for photos and the full report.
- Video call the seller. Ask them to walk around the car, start it from cold and show you the odometer.
- Agree the sale in writing. Price, deposit terms, what's included, and that the sale depends on the inspection. The deposit questions guide has the list.
- Pay safely. Only once the checks are done and the paperwork matches. Pay to an account in the registered seller's name.
- Transfer ownership online. You and the seller both notify NZTA. It can all be done online.
- Book the transport. Arrange insurance from when the car is yours, not from when it arrives.
What does car transport cost in NZ?
| Route | Typical price, standard car |
|---|---|
| Auckland to Wellington | $800 to $1,100 |
| Christchurch to Dunedin or Queenstown | $650 to $950 |
| Wellington to Christchurch, with ferry | $1,100 to $1,400 |
| Auckland to Christchurch, with ferry | $1,750 to $2,150 |

Add transport to the price when you compare. A car that's $1,500 cheaper but a ferry away may not be cheaper at all.
The risks, and how to handle them
- The car isn't as described. An independent inspection, with the VIN on the report, handles this.
- The seller isn't who they say. Check the name on the registration matches the person you're paying.
- Money owing. A PPSR check shows any finance on the car. Make sure it's cleared before you pay.
- Damage in transit. Check what cover the transport company provides, and what your own insurance covers.
“Where the car is matters less than whether it's the right one. The distance is just logistics.”
